PMaC Laboratories, based in San Diego, California, was founded by leading researchers in the
performance modeling and prediction of HPC systems. The company assists clients in the government
and private sector in procuring mission-critical HPC systems and maximizing the effectiveness of existing
systems based on specific application characteristics. With the increasing reliance on modeling &
simulation, virtual prototyping, and computer-aided engineering across numerous market segments,
PMaC's expertise and tools can assist enterprises in maximizing the return-on-investment in HPC
systems.

PMaC's performance analysis and profiling tools developed for the Department of Defense's High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) were recently employed by a group of DoD users to detect and resolve communications imbalances in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code FEFLO. Using PMaC's tools, the DoD team conducting blast modeling using FEFLO discovered that a previously unnoticed communications imbalance severely lengthened time-to-solution under certain test cases, which was found rapidly using the clear visual evidence provided by PMaC's MPI profiling tool. Further consultations with the user identified an optimization that could be made in the code's communications semantics in order to reduce or eliminate the imbalance. Implementation resulted in improvements of over 500% for certain cases. PMaC's tools are provided to DoD users in partnership with the Consolidated Customer Assistance Center (CCAC).
